This is the first time in surfing’s history that a nationally available program, encouraging kids to engage in the sport of surfing, has been available anywhere in the world.

With the support of the Federal Government through the Australian Sports Commission (ASC), Surfing Australia has developed this robust, innovative and cutting edge junior development program for kids Australia wide.

SurfGroms is exclusively available through Surfing Australia’s network of licensed surf schools to anyone aged between 5 and 12 years old, regardless of experience or ability. SurfGroms develops a proficiency in surfing that kids can enjoy and embrace for a lifetime, and offer youngsters an opportunity to have loads of fun at the beach whilst developing strong ocean awareness and beach safety skills at a very influential period in their lives.

SurfGroms forms the base of Surfing Australia’s sport development pathway, ensuring that more participants continue surfing throughout their lifetime, ingraining into them a healthy lifestyle that is proudly Australian!

Is SurfGroms safe for Children?

SurfGroms has been developed with your child’s safety as the priority. Every SurfGroms Delivery Centre is licensed by, and affiliated to Surfing Australia, meaning they are required to follow our strict guidelines relating to operational quality and safety.

Every surf coach your child will meet through SurfGroms is an experienced and accredited Surfing Australia instructor. They will also hold a Surf Rescue Certificate & Senior First Aid Certificate as a minimum; and a valid ‘working with children’ card for the State they operate within.
The equipment used by  SurfGroms Delivery Centres has been specifically designed with group safety in mind, and all of the activities and lessons incorporated into the program have been designed to encourage your child to develop their ability in both surfing and in beach safety skills.

Surfing is a great way to enjoy our beach environment safely whilst also ingraining into them a healthy lifestyle that is proudly Australian!

How many surf coaches are in attendence per program?

Surfing Australia sets a safe maximum instructor/student ratio of 1:8, however many delivery centres choose to reduce these ratios further to ensure maximum enjoyment and success in the surf.

In addition to the program instructors, there may also be parent volunteers helping out both in the water and on the beach and supporting the coaches in delivering your child’s program.

What will my child learn in SurfGroms?

SurfGroms adopts an approach to learning that uses group-based games to not only equip your child with the skills they need to surf, but also to encourage their participation by having fun. Every SurfGroms lesson is designed purposefully to create a positive and supportive learning environment so that every participant can experience the confidence and freedom of surfing for a lifetime.
SurfGroms teaches 5-12 year olds core surfing skills in the ocean across 5 incremental skill levels, as well as fundamnetal Ocean Awareness and Beach Safety skills such as surf survival and rescue techniques; basic first aid skills; and about varying surf conditions at the beach.

My child is not a strong swimmer, can he/she still join in?

Your child needs to be water confident to join SurfGroms. It is our expectation that your child can:

Float unassisted
Submerge without fear (open eyes under water and demonstrate breath control – blow bubbles underwater)
Free movement – move around confidently in an ocean environment independently and in a group situation
All Level 1 activities are conducted in shallow water (waist depth) only. This allows those with a limited swimming ability to participate in the program, enabling them to develop their skills and confidence in the surf before moving up to the next skill level.

What about girls?

SurfGroms is perfectly suited to girls…in fact, last season 52% of participants were girls!
In the past, surfing was a very male dominated sport, however in the past 10 years we have seen seen some incredible female surfers appearing on the world stage. As a result, more and more girls are getting involved in surfing and we want this to continue!
SurfGroms encourages every girl aged between 5 & 12 years old to register to a program and experience the exhilaration of surfing at their local beach!

Is SurfGroms competitive?

SurfGroms is acutely aware of many parents concern about their child entering competitive sports too early. SurfGroms’ unique approach to programming reflects and upholds CHOICE, F.U.N.N. (Functional Understanding Not Necessary) and DISCOVERY, all within a VALUED and carefully SEQUENCED environment. The focus is on participation and enjoyment, not on winning.
With this approach, SurfGroms can successfully engage the participation of every kid in a group, not to mention, help them realise their surfing dreams!
Competitive surfing is something that SurfGroms can graduate to later on if they want to.
